Musings for Wednesday 7/18/07

Rock n Roll Circus

One of the tents on the circus tonight is Hair Band ballads, so let's take a look at where some of our favorite hair metal artists are now...

(Thanks to Kevin Miller at Metromix)

Rocker: Bret Michaels
Rocked with: Poison (1984-present)
Rockin' do: Long, blonde and stringy
Still rockin'?: Not only has the "Talk Dirty to Me" singer taken over for Flavor Flav as VH1's most wanted ex-celebrity (see "Rock of Love"), but the renaissance man continues to release music in all shapes and forms: Country songs, soundtracks to films he directed ("A Letter from Death Row," starring Charlie Sheen) and even a recent Top 40 record by Poison, featuring all cover songs. Quality is another matter…

Rocker: Kip Winger
Rocked with: Winger (1987-1994)
Rockin' do: A seriously shaggy mane
Still rockin'?: Yep—after a few false starts, the band released the politically conscious "Winger IV" in 2006. Yes, we said "politically conscious."

Rocker: Jani Lane
Rocked with: Warrant (1984-2004)
Rockin' do: Blonde mane
Still rockin'?: Yes and no. Warrant has soldiered on with a new singer, while the rather bloated Lane has released a few negligible solo projects. He's earned far more notoriety for his recent actions though, which include tales of booze-fueled stage shows, an appearance on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club" and a rather public falling out with Quiet Riot's Kevin DuBrow (winning our vote for "Least Important Rock Star Feud of All-Time").

Rocker: Tom Keifer
Rocked with: Cinderella (1982-1994, and periodically afterward) Rockin' do: Big and feathery, with bangs to boot
Still rockin'?: Sort of. Keifer's raspy growl (and gigantic lid) occasionally grace the summer arena circuit, usually on nostalgic packages like the "Rock Never Stops" tour of 2006 (featuring Cinderella and Poison). Keifer, despite some obvious talent, has threatened to release a solo album in the near future with country overtones, much like his peers Jon Bon Jovi, Bret Michaels and Ron Keel.

Rocker: Jack Russell
Rocked with: Great White (1981-present, with breaks)
Rockin' do: A long, seemingly ironed-out mop
Still rockin'?: Although best remembered for its role in the nightclub fire in Rhode Island back in 2003 that took the lives of over 100 people, Great White recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with another tour featuring all the original GW members. Oddly, Russell looks the exact same as he did 20 years ago. That's not a compliment, but it is an achievement of sorts…

Rocker: David Coverdale
Rocked with: Whitesnake (1978-1990 and various points afterwards)
Rockin' do: A big, dolled- up 'do
Still rockin'?: Coverdale may have scored one of the glam era's defining hits ("Here I Go Again"), but even at his band's peak, the former Deep Purple frontman seemed a little too old to be playing the hairspray game. A reunited 'snake recorded four new songs last year, with a promise (threat?) of more to come. Today, the singer may best be known for his former marriage to rock groupie Tawny Kitaen, whose personal life has graced the pages of tabloids in recent years

Ringmaster Says...

When the situation warrants, I am going to periodically editorialize about topics that interest (bother) me. Today, I must weigh in on this Michael Vick dog fighting controversy. If you have been living in a cave, and don't know what I am referring to, Vick is the quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and was indicted yesterday on charges stemming from an illegal dogfighting ring run from his residence. I am by no means an animal lover, but this is a vile, disgusting practice. I have read the myriad of ways these dogs that don't "measure up" are disposed of, and they include electrocution, drowning, shooting, slamming them into the ground, and other despicable, inhumane acts. Vick obviously has some mental problems that he must address, but until he does, I don't believe Michael (Con)Vick belongs in the NFL.
